Look who rode by our house today.




The Tour of Pennsylvania went right by our house. This is a race from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. All the riders are young men between the ages of 18 and 24, some of who may go on to ride the Tour de France. It was so fun to see these guys up close and to watch them climb a hill, even a little one. Yesterday they climbed some very steep and long hills to get to Latrobe, and today they climbed a few more before they headed off to Pittsburgh. Their average speed is about 28-30 miles per hour. That’s booking. My average speed is about 15-16 mph, of course I am an old lady, but still.

This is my big front border. It’s a jumble of lots of favorites. She has been neglected the last year or two. (Can you see the ground elder?) Many big shrubs have not been successful, but I keep amending the soil and hope springs eternal. And did you see that little stalk of tiny gladiolus byzantinus? I read about this lovely plant in Margery Fish’s book, We Made a Garden, many, many years ago. She had a wrap your arms around clump. I have these little singles poking up all around the place. Obviously I’m doing something wrong but I do feel a lightness of spirit when I see these dainty maidens. #gardensofinstagram #margeryfish #gladiolus
In an effort to show the hood the bad and the ugly I’m laying it all bare. I love this new woodland garden I put in two years ago but the wildness behind it is not my dream. We live below a stone quarry and while that means I have plenty of stones to build stone walls it also makes planting a challenge. And I’m not getting any younger. #gardensofinstagram #woodland
This is a small portion of the buckets of self seeded ‘Lauren’s Grape’ poppies I let get away from me in my vegetable garden. It’s is my favorite poppy by far and I’ve never had this much success near our house, too shady. But man they are everywhere in the full sun of the veggie garden. Tomorrow I’m transplanting the big mammas in the ornamental beds. The little ones taking over my pea patch are going to my bestie. Poppy presents are the bomb. #gardens #gardensofinstagram #poppies
